About NSBE
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was founded in 1975 by six Black engineering students at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Concerned about the underrepresentation of Black engineers and the high dropout rate among Black engineering students, they created a student organization to address these issues. The first chapter, originally named the Society of Black Engineers (SBE), quickly gained momentum and expanded to other universities. In 1976, it was renamed the National Society of Black Engineers and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Today, NSBE is one of the largest student-run organizations in the U.S., with over 600 chapters and more than 24,000 members worldwide.
